El artículo aborda la cuestión del complejo legado de la batalla de Lepanto en Portugal. Por un lado, la batalla de 1571 fue una ocasión perdida debido a la falta de participación de Portugal bajo el rey Sebastián, que tenía otras prioridades en aquel momento. Por otra parte, a través de la posterior intervención de rey Juan V en la batalla de Matapán, se enmendó tal falta de participación previa de Portugal. Se puede observar, por lo demás, una imagen compleja y cambiante del islam, desde un islam africano bajo Sebastián, hasta uno más “oriental” bajo Juan V, quien astuta y cuidadosamente se presentó a sí mismo como un defensor de los cristianos del Medio Oriente en su lucha contra los turcos.

The article deals with the complex legacy of the battle of Lepanto in Portugal. On the one hand the 1571 battle was an occasion lost due to Portugal’s lack of participation under King Sebastian who had other priorities at the time. On the other hand, due to King John v’s participation in the 1717 victory in the battle of Matapan Portugal’s lack of previous participation was vindicated. A complex and changing image of Islam can be observed, from an African one under Sebastian to a more “oriental” one under John v who craftily and carefully fashioned himself as a defender of Middle Eastern Christians in their struggle against the Turks
