Resumen de Arias Montano y los jesuitas: la carta apócrifa de 1571

  En este estudio se examina la carta que supuestamente habría dirigido en febrero de 1571 Benito Arias Montano al rey Felipe II acerca de los jesuitas, sobre los que se manifiesta una opinión muy desfavorable. Dicha carta se ha transmitido en numerosos manuscritos hoy conservados en múltiples Bibliotecas y Archivos. Existen abundantes discrepancias en los textos que transmiten los distintos manuscritos. Editamos aquí el texto de uno de ellos. Mostramos las numerosas razones por las que dicha carta debe tenerse por apócrifa. Proponemos una datación aproximada y ofrecemos datos de interés para poder determinar la verdadera autoría de la misma. Se editan y comentan también algunos documentos que juzgamos de interés sobre los jesuitas en Amberes (1570-1573).

  This study examines the letter supposedly sent by the humanist Benito Arias Montano to king Philip II of Spain in February 1571 in which the former expounds his disparaging views of the Jesuits. The letter’s content appears in several manuscripts currently held in various libraries and archives and there are numerous discrepancies between the texts recorded in these different manuscripts. Here, we focus on the text contained in one of the manuscripts and will offer a number of reasons for which said letter should be considered apocryphal. We propose an approximate date for the letter and provide a range of interesting evidence that points to its true author. We also include annotated text from several other significant documents concerning the Antwerp Jesuits (1570-1753).
