This chapter will take a closer look at the history of Demand Response (DR) and Demand-Side Management (DSM) in the United States and will discuss the events leading up to the implementation of more automation. We will review the OpenADR standard, what it initially included, and early use cases. After a brief look at the re-development of OpenADR during the economic crisis between 2008 and 2010, the chapter provides a review of the latest smart appliances regulations that involve OpenADR and CTA-2045. Other standards like EEBUS and Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) are also briefly discussed.
