Guillermo San Martín, José Manuel Viéitez Martín, Antonio Campoy Sanchez Fortun

  • In this paper a contribution to the study of polychaete fauna of the Balearic Islands has been done. 42 species (5 identificated at the generic level) of errant polichaete are cited, half of wich belong to the Syllidae family. All specimens have been collected in the Bay of Palma (Majorca). Taxonomical, ecological and biogeographical data are given for each species. For the new or rare species in the western Mediterranean Sea and Spanish coasts a wider study is realized. Two species are cited by the first time in Spanish coast: Langerhansia rosea and Sphaerosyllis cf. austriaca; another 5 species Syllida armata, Odontosyllis ctenostoma, Parapionosyllis minuta, Brania oculata and Typosyllisbrevipennis are cited by the first time in Spanish Mediterranean coasts. Furthermore, 24 species are new for the Balearic fauna. Sphaerosyllis sp., only identified at the generic level is a unknown species in the western Mediterranean Sea. The synonymy of Sphaerosyllis hystrix and S. pirifera is discused, the autors considering them as different taxonomic species.
