The paper first of all highlights the main factors that led to the delineation of an informal institutional accreditation of the non-Catholic Confessions based on Law No. 1159 of 1929, emphasising the crucial role played in this regard by the Council of State (Consiglio di Stato), with the guidelines outlined by it to oversee the matter. In examining the basic reasons for the critical issues encountered in the latter until a few years ago, it takes the cue from two recent favourable opinions issued by the Council to hypothesise the emergence of an innovative direction aimed at better calibrating, in a dialogic-operational key, the weight and importance of the identity-related specificities at stake.
