  • Resumen
    • Fishing areas are more and more extended in allo oceans. Commercial activities connected with the exchange of the catches are therefore increased. Since longtime, well known fishes (chiefly Gadiforms and Pleuroconectiforms) regularly arrive from North Europe to the Mediterranean markets. Many other species from very different regions (West Africa, Argentina, Indian ocean, etc.) are now added with fresh or frozen specimens. Several are purely occasional (Polynemids, Carangids, etc.). Others (Lutjanids, Ophidioids, etc.) are more frequent and more or less irregularly imported. In both cases, problems of identification ofen arise, because the specimens are not always complete and their exact origin is often unknown. However, the examination of this material may be interesting from the scientific point of view and also for practical purposes, emphasizing the value of some edible species and reminding negative features of others, as the toxicity. This note is a review, with some remarks, of exotic fishes observed in some Italian markets but surely found also elsewhere. There are about sevently species, geographically arranged. Of course this is not expected to be a complete list of foreign species reaching the Mediterranean countries
