En la segunda mitad del siglo XVI la emigración canaria fue cada vez mayor debido al declive de la producción azucarera, siendo esta, mayoritariamente, masculina. El cambio que supuso en la población isleña estos movimientos migratorios ha provocado interés en los investigadores, sobre todo en destapar el rol de las mujeres que decidieron embarcarse también hacia nuevos territorios y convertirse en emigrantes.

In the second half of the 16th century, emigration from the Canary Islands increased due to the decline in sugar production, which was mainly male. The change that these migratory movements brought about in the island's population has sparked the interest of researchers, especially in uncovering the role of women who also decided to embark for new territories and become emigrants
