  • Resumen
    • In 2005 Professor James Heisig, director of the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture, and a close personal friend of Ueda’s, prepared an English translation of his review of the Ueda Shizuteru Collection for The Eastern Buddhist. In this offering, we have more than a comprehensive overview of Ueda’s writings as they evolved over thirty years to embrace philosophy East and West, mysticism, phenomenology, and ultimately Zen Buddhism, we also find a view of the life that animates the Kyoto School philosopher’s writings. This essay is an invaluable guide that organizes Ueda’s momentus philosophical output into a coherent structural pattern and describes how the writings came to be organized in this collection of volumes, thus helping the novice reader or the Ueda scholar to orient themselves within his philosophical corpus as it is organized in the Collection. Heisig also helps readers to orient themselves regarding Ueda’s unique approach to philosophical and religious thinkers such as Eckhart, Nishida, Heidegger, James, Buber, Jaspers, as well as Kimura Bin, Michel Henry and many others.
