  • Resumen
    • This paper analyzes Spanish possessive constructions with the verb tener (e.g., tiene carro) which is formed when con (“with”) incorporates into a simplex copula, ser (Avelar, 2004, 2009b; Levinson, 2011). It provides a descriptive overview of the possessive verb traer (e.g., trae carro) which results when con incorporates into a complex copula, estar (Gallego & Uriagereka, 2016). The possessive reading in both constructions is an epiphenomenon of the accompaniment semantics of con and the stative verb (Levinson, 2011). Furthermore, the temporary semantics of estar are inherited by the possessive verb traer. Possessive estar con constructions are possible when a light preposition, p, merges with the PP headed by con. This p blocks incorporation of con into the verb (Levinson, 2011).
