This study traces the development of the Florida Chautauqua and its thirty‐six year history in the Panhandle town of De‐Funiak Springs. As a focal point for cultural activities, lectures, speeches, educational events, conferences, and social gatherings, the Florida Chautauqua benefited from the mild Gulf Coast winter season and drew visitors and winter residents from the mid‐western states as well as from around the South. A curious blend of “boosterism” and education, it provided entertainment and cultural enrichment until it was replaced by the mass media.
