Resumen de Computational Resources for Handling Sociolinguistic Corpora

Livia Oushiro

  • In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in publications with the objective of bridging the gap between Sociolinguistics and Corpus Linguistics as well as between Sociolinguistics and Computational Linguistics. This chapter aims to present to sociolinguistically inclined researchers strategies to make their work more reproducible, reliable, and robust through computational tools. In that regard, it contrasts Corpus, Computational, and Sociolinguistic perspectives on what constitutes data, noting that sociolinguistic corpora are often defined as “small,” “unconventional,” and “untamed” by corpus and computational linguists. The chapter presents recommended practices in handling corpora for the study of language variation and change, covering the steps of a variationist study just before quantitative analyses. Sociolinguistics has employed and developed a wide range of methodologies for data collection and compilation for analyzing both speech production and perception, from synchronic or diachronic perspectives.
