  • Resumen
    • Symptoms of communication disorders are often variable and gradient, and manifest in seemingly idiosyncratic patterns of intact and impaired functioning. Usage-based approaches seem well poised to improve an understanding of communication disorders. Explicitly usage-based work on communication disorders has focused almost exclusively on aphasia, i.e., one particular cluster of disorders, and, within aphasiology, on a relatively narrow set of empirical and theoretical questions. This chapter reviews observations about aphasia, usage-based analyses of aphasia, and, to a lesser extent, other communication disorders, including language impairments in dementia and stuttering. It highlights some implications of usage-based approaches for intervention, as well as avenues for future research. The chapter focuses on three theoretical commitments of usage-based approaches that are shared by many, but by no means all, avowedly “usage-based” proposals.
