  • Resumen
    • Specialized literature reserves little attention for the colonial period chapels in Brazil rather it concentrates on the manifestations of large-scale religious architecture which associates eighteenth century Brazilian churches with the late international Baroque. This article diminishes this lacuna by amplifying scientific knowledge about small-scale religious architecture from the colonial period. Moreover, it specifically describes the architectonic model as well as the construction techniques of chapels built in the municipality of Mariana from 1700 to 1750. The research methods are based on direct identification and observation of these chapels in conjunction with iconographic, oral and written sources. The partial results of this research are predominance of an architectonic model defined by a rectangular plant formed by a nave and sanctuary; gabled roof; straight-lined triangular façade (frontal exterior); nonexistent campanile (bell tower); lateral sacristy with an independent entrance; scarcity of internal and external decoration. These results suggestan architectural model adjusted to the designated Mannerist Style.
