This chapter explores the recent growth of African American diaspora tourism as quasi-religious pilgrimage to the village of Bimbia, Cameroon, which served as a major slave port in the region. Having first discussed the historical development of slavery and slave trade routes in this region, the chapter discusses the recent development of the village of Bimbia in the context of slave routes, and the resultant 'pilgrimages of reconnection' to this area. In particular, the chapter focuses on the economic and environmental challenges related to the creation of slave routes that cater for 'slave pilgrims'.
