  En diversas culturas, antiguas y modernas, el primogénito suele gozar de un estatus especial entre los hermanos. Este estatus especial se refiere, por ejemplo, a ciertos derechos peculiares en materia de herencia y al ejercicio de la autoridad en sentido amplio. El presente artículo investiga el concepto de primogénito en el Israel bíblico, también en el contexto más amplio del Medio Oriente Antiguo. El punto de partida del análisis I Cro 5:1-2 en el que se describe la relación entre tres hijos de Jacob: Rubén, José y Judá. Este texto contiene varios elementos que definen el concepto tratado. Por lo tanto, resulta ser un excelente trampolín para posteriores investigaciones que no quieran limitarse a una simple descripción de la realidad de la primogenitura en el Israel bíblico y en el Medio Oriente Antiguo, sino que también quieran averiguar si se puede observar algún rasgo particular, vinculado de nuevo a l concepto de primogenitura, que distinga al pueblo de Israel de sus vecinos.

  In a number of different cultures, both ancient and modern, the first-born son often enjoys a special position among his brothers. This special position confers, e.g., certain special rights in matters o f inheritance and in the exercise of authority, broadly understood. This article inquires into the concepty of the first-born in Biblical Israel, also in the wider context of the Ancient Near East. The point of departure for its analysis is I Chr 5, 1-2, where the relationships are described among three of Jacob's sons: Reuben, Joseph, and Judah. This text contains various elements, which define the concept here expounded. It is intended to provide a helpful launching pad for further research, specifically further research that will not be simply descriptive of the reality of primogeniture in Biblical Israel and in the Ancient Near East, bur that will also seek to discover wether or not it be possible to identify some particular trait, regarding the concept of primogeniture, distinguishing the People of Israel from the neighbouring peoples.
