Abstract Through a survey of the conceptual history of freedom, this paper critically analyses the main discussions that have taken place in this field. The analysis begins with the contemporary discussion triggered by Isaiah Berlin’s influential essay, ‘Two Concepts of Liberty’. This essay not only sharply separates negative freedom from positive freedom, but also serves as a starting point for the republican onslaught that proposes a third concept of freedom, as the absence of domination. While the latter concept offers advantages from the perspective of democratic constitutionalism, it remains within the theoretical contours proposed by Berlin. Challenging this contour, this article proposes to rescue Hegel’s thinking on freedom-developed in the Philosophy of Right-as a conceptual tool that not only allows us to open up the margins of contemporary discussion, but also explains some of the social pathologies facing the modern world.
