Resumen de Contemporary perspectives of pilgrimage

Daniel H. Olsen, Dallen J. Timothy

  • The purpose of this chapter is to highlight contemporary perspectives of pilgrimage in the (post-)modern world, particularly focusing on changes that have taken place in pilgrimage travel due to the 'democratisation of travel' and the use of pilgrimage and pilgrim as a metaphor to describe other types of mobilities and experiences. After discussing the changing definitions and meanings of pilgrimage in a post-modern and post-secular era, different types of pilgrimage destinations and motivations for and uses of pilgrimage travel, attention turns to several issues that affect pilgrimage today, including the politics of sacred-site management, over-/undertourism, and heritage designation.
