Bibliographia alvaresiana: sonho irrealista ou projeto com futuro?

    Having as a starting point the paper of the Italian Jesuit Emilio Springhetti (1913-1976) in which he attributes to the Latin-Portuguese grammar Emmanvelis Alvari è Societate Iesu de institutione grammatica libri tres by the Madeiran Jesuit Manuel Álvares (1526-1583) a number of 530 editions (Springhetti 1962-1963: 304), the present article undertakes a study of the references to the Alvaresian grammar and the respective listings within the existing bibliographic repertories from the 17th century to the end of the 20th century. In view of the divergence of documented editions, ranging from a consideration 158 complete and partial editions in 1854 to a list of 651 at the end of the 20th century, we exemplify some results of our current bibliographical research on the beginnings of the various national traditions of Alvaresian grammar in several countries of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Europe. As we have been working on increasing the Alvaresian section of the Brazilian database LUSODAT (s.d. a) for something over a decade, the article ends by offering an update of Springhetti’s table (by nature provisional as work continues), titled «Edições da gramática alvaresiana», in which the number has grown to 1098 editions, thus offering a first step towards a future establishment of what is to be called the Bibliographia alvaresiana.

    Tendo como ponto de partida o artigo do jesuíta italiano Emilio Springhetti (1913- 1976) em que este atribui, para a gramática latino-portuguesa Emmanvelis Alvari è Societate Iesu de institutione grammatica libri tres d o j esuíta m adeirense M anuel Álvares (1526-1583) um número de 530 edições (Springhetti 1962-1963: 304), o presente artigo empreende um estudo das referências à gramática alvaresiana e das respetivas listagens dentro dos repertórios bibliográficos existentes desde o século XVII até a finais do século XX. Perante a divergência das edições documentadas, que vai desde a consideração de 158 edições completas e parciais, em 1854, até à listagem de 651 em finais do século XX, exemplificam-se alguns resultados das nossas investigações bibliográficas atuais sobre os inícios das várias tradições nacionais da gramática alvaresiana em vários países da Europa quinhentista e seiscentista. Como temos trabalhado em aumentar a secção alvaresiana da base de dados brasileira LUSODAT (s.d. a) ao longo de algo mais de uma década, o artigo termina por oferecer uma atualização do quadro de Springhetti (por natureza provisório como os trabalhos continuam), intitulado «Edições da gramática alvaresiana», e em cujo âmbito o número tem crescido para 1098 edições, oferecendo, assim, um primeiro passo para um futuro estabelecimento daquilo que se deverá chamar Bibliographia alvaresiana.
