Cabezas exentas, inscripciones antropomorfas y culto a los antepasados en la Asturias antigua

    Las cabezas cortadas (exentas) no se asocian a los sacrificios humanos recogidos por Estrabón como figuración de los enemigos muertos en combate sino que podrían representar a los antepasados de cada uno de los centros de población de la Asturias castreña. Este culto a los ancestros hallaría su expresión a través de la celebración de la fiesta en honor de los jóvenes del poblado en el momento del paso a la edad adulta tras haber superado una serie de pruebas y convertirse en nuevos guerreros defensores de la comunidad. Por ello las inscripciones antropomorfas de carácter funerario del territorio astur tal vez haya que interpretarlas como expresión de dicha realidad social en un intento por mantener presente el recuerdo de los antepasados y su ayuda desde el más allá.

    The severed heads (exempt) are not associated with the human sacrifices recorded by Strabo as a representation of enemies killed in battle, but represent the ancestors of each of the population centres of Asturias. This cult of the ancestors would find its expression through the celebration of the festival in honour of the young men of the village at the time of their passage to adulthood after having passed a series of physical tests and having become new warriors defending the community. The anthropomorphic inscriptions of a funerary nature in Asturian territory should perhaps be interpreted as an expression of this social reality in an attempt to maintain the memory of the ancestors and their help from beyond the grave.
