    La mayoría de formas de enfermedad periodontal inflama- toria pueden ser controladas y tratadas con éxito, sin embargo algunos tipos de enfermedad, como el síndrome de Papillon- Lefèvre (SPL), no responden bien al tratamiento. El SPL es un desorden caracterizado por hiperqueratosis de la piel y perio- dontitis agresiva en la infancia. La pérdida parcial o total de la dentición representa un reto al momento de la rehabilitación protésica. El manejo clínico de la periodontitis es problemáti- co y se han propuesto diversos enfoques terapéuticos en el intento de preservar la dentición permanente el mayor tiempo posible. Los autores realizan una revisión bibliográfica del momento actual de esta alteración, haciendo hincapié en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de esta enfermedad poco común, pero de gran relevancia clínica.

    Most types of periodontal diseases can be controlled and treated successfully. Nevertheless, some types of periodontitis do not respond well to treatment. One of these is the Papillon- Lefèvre syndrome. Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome is character- ized by skin hyperkeratosis and the development of an aggres- sive and early onset periodontitis. The partial or total loss of the dentition represents a challenge for the pediatric dentist at the time of prosthetic rehabilitation. The clinical management is problematic. Several therapeutic criterions have been pro- posed, in order to maintain the permanent dentition for as long as possible. The authors’ review the literature in search of the actual moment of this condition, focusing on diagnose and treatment of this uncommon disease, whose clinical relevance is important.
