    Durante la Segunda República los museos españoles experimentaron un proceso de reconversión gracias a las políticas culturales de los gobiernos progresistas. Entre ellos, el Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas vivió un profundo proceso de reconversión, acompañado por la revalorización de las artes populares y la etnografía. En esta investigación se partirá de la contextualización del auge de este tipo de patrimonio para conocer, por un lado, la génesis del Museo del Pueblo Español, y, por otro lado, para estudiar el proceso de renovación del Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas, que cambió de sede. Ambos proyectos estuvieron unidos por la búsqueda de una nueva definición de las artes decorativas y populares, argumentada por los intelectuales de la época, que justificaba la necesidad de un gran museo que acogiera estas colecciones, algo que nunca ocurrió.

    During the Second Republic, the Spanish museums underwent a conversion process thanks to the cultural policies of progressive governments. Among them, the National Museum of Decorative Arts endured a profound conversion process, accompanied by the revaluation of popular arts and ethnography. This research will start from the contextualization of the rise of this type of heritage to learn, on the one hand, the genesis of the Museum of the Spanish People, and, on the other hand, to study the renovation process of the National Museum of Decorative Arts, which changed venue. Both projects were linked by the search for a new definition of decorative and popular arts, argued by the intellectuals of the time, which justified the need for a large museum to house these collections, something that never happened.
