Foreign language learning (FLL) has been proposed as a promising cognitive training for the elderly. This studyinvestigates cognitive processes as they were in interaction with the wider environment. It was a case study of six Chinese lowereducation older adults joining a short-term intensive English learning program. Cognitive Assessment showed a slightenhancement of their cognitive skills after FLL with a small to medium effect size. Qualitative analysis of lesson observationsand interviews reveals that FLL helps them make new meanings of old concepts and contexts, thus maximizing the cognitivebenefits.
