This essay examines the development of the narrative theme of the ‘three rings’, symbols of the three monotheistic religions, in the literary tradition of the thirteenth and fourteenth-century, during which the narrative changes, especially in the transition from the genre of the exemplum to that of the novella. Boccaccio’s version (Dec. I 3), which is the privileged object of the investigation, relies on the previous tradition, presenting its major innovations through its protagonists: Melchisedech and Saladin. The article shows that it is above all the function of the rings to change, whose thaumaturgical value, represented by the exemplary tradition, is replaced in its novelistic form (from the Novellino to the Avventuroso Ciciliano) by economic and aesthetic values.

Il saggio esamina lo sviluppo del tema narrativo dei ‘tre anelli’, simboli delle tre religioni monoteiste, nella tradizione letteraria dei secoli XIII e XIV, durante i quali il testo si modifica soprattutto nel passaggio tra il genere dell’exemplum e quello della novella.
La versione boccacciana (Dec. I 3), che costituisce l’oggetto privilegiato dell’indagine, si avvale della tradizione precedente, presentando le maggiori novità attraverso i suoi protagonisti: Melchisedech e il Saladino. L’articolo dimostra che a mutare è soprattutto la funzione degli anelli, il cui valore taumaturgico, rappresentato dalla tradizione esemplare, viene sostituito nella sua forma novellistica (dal Novellino all’Avventuroso ciciliano) dai valori economici ed estetici.
