Para explicar de qué modo el embrión recibe el alma, el autor del tratado epistolar Ad Gaurum, probablemente Porfirio, aplica a la noción de “aptitud” (ἐπιτηδειότης) un nuevo enfoque que, desde la metafísica neoplatónica, redefine la noción aristotélica de “en potencia”. En el momento del parto, se implanta en el embrión que es apto para recibirla un alma animal, que le dota de sensación e impulso y que le permite un movimiento local.

To explain in what way the embryo receives the soul, the author of the epistolary treatise Ad Gaurum, probably Porphyry, applies to the notion of “aptitude” (ἐπιτηδειότης) a new approach that, from a Neoplatonic metaphysics perspective, redefines the Aristotelian notion of “potentiality”. At the moment of birth, an animal soul is implanted in the embryo that is fit to receive it, which endows the embryo with sensation and impulse and which allows him local movement.
