This article goes over the results of a study of Catalan children’s literature that uses its pages to promote values such as coeducation, parity, and gender equality. The research was carried out in an optional course from students’ final year in the Master’s degree program in Early Childhood Education at the University of Alicante.
Students from the course Catalan Children’s Literature (Literatura catalana infantil) who participated in this experiment were interviewed on various occasions. They had to fill out initial and final surveys concerning their opinions on equality, the breaking of masculine stereotypes, and women’s empowerment. Meanwhile, both in class and at home, they read theoretical texts discussing sex roles and at least two Catalan children’s books (chosen by the students themselves from a body of 20 stories that are thematically related to the object of study). An analysis of the obtained sample values reveals the importance that future teachers place on ensuring coeducation in the classroom and the significance of reading when it comes to offering a more efficient and effective understanding of this situation.
