Resumen de Basic assumptions in the Virginia ratification debates: Patrick Henry vs. James Madison on the nature of man and reason

Lois J. Einhorn

  • This study examines the assumptions about the nature of man and the role of reason that were reflected in the speeches of Patrick Henry and James Madison in the Virginia Ratification Convention on the Federal Constitution. These assumptions constitute a portion of what was philosophically and rhetorically at issue between the Antifederalist and Federalist leaders and offer a possible explanation for the voting behavior in the Convention.
