La aljama mudéjar de Toledo bajo los primeros Trastámara: entre la supervivencia y la conversión

    La situación de las aljamas mudéjares de Castilla entre la entronización de Enrique II y el final del reinado de Enrique III todavía necesita de estudios en profundidad. La aparición de un largo pleito en la catedral de Toledo, que comenzó en torno a 1390 y terminó en 1407, nos permite abordar un estudio preliminar de esta aljama para dicho periodo. En primer lugar se establecerá el marco para el despegue de la comunidad mudéjar en un Toledo diezmado por la peste y la guerra civil, y que ha perdido la mayor parte de su comunidad judía. Además de realizar un análisis prosopográfico de los miembros de la aljama mudéjar, de sus parientes conversos y de las autoridades cristianas involucradas en su día a día, a lo largo del pleito se desgranan las características básicas para el reconocimiento de la aljama por el rey y por sus conciudadanos. Se advierte a través de los testimonios que la conversión al cristianismo va ganando terreno entre los mudéjares, cuyas familias son cada vez más mixtas, y que los reyes sustentan esta política de conversión entre las élites mudejares. Finalmente, se percibe cómo el contacto continuo con el arzobispo y el cabildo desempeña un papel fundamental en el desarrollo y limitaciones de la vida diaria de la aljama.

    The situation of Mudejar aljamas in Castile between Henry II’s accession and the end of Henry III’s reign still needs in-depth studies. The appearance of a long lawsuit in the cathedral of Toledo, which began around 1390 and ended in 1407, allows us to approach the study of this aljama for the given period. First of all, we will see the development of the Mudejar community in a city decimated by the plague and civil war, which had lost most of its Jewish community. The prosopographical analysis of the members of the Mudejar aljama, their convert relatives and the Christian authorities involved in their daily life, is followed by the basic characteristics for the recognition of the aljama by the king and by their fellow citizens, unraveled throughout the lawsuit. Testimonies show that conversion to Christianity was increasing among the Mudejars, whose families were becoming more and more mixed. The kings supported this conversion policy among Mudejar elites. Finally, we can see how the continuous contact with the archbishop and the chapter plays a fundamental role in the development and limitations of the daily life of the aljama.
