Las conversaciones sobre las relaciones entre grupos étnicos suelen ser complejas, sobre todo si una de las etnias o comunidades fue históricamente discriminada por la otra. Dichas conversaciones suelen polarizarse política y emocionalmente; se recurre a la acusación, la culpa y los reclamos, y se recomienda la redistribución de bienes y la retribución. En lugar de pavimentar el camino hacia una convivencia cordial y pacífica, los discursos revanchistas cavan zanjas de tristeza, odio, incomprensión y resentimiento. Esta tónica suele caracterizar las conversaciones entre etnias en Guatemala y en otras sociedades multiétnicas, de ahí que sea oportuno el libro Black Liberation Through the Marketplace: Hope, Heartbreak, and the Promise of America, cuyo título se podría traducir más o menos en esta forma: La liberación afroamericana a través del mercado: esperanza, dolor de corazón, y la promesa de América.

Conversations about inter-ethnic relations are often complex, especially if one ethnic group or community was historically discriminated against by the other. Such conversations are often politically and emotionally polarized; accusation, blame and grievances are resorted to, and redistribution of goods and retribution are recommended. Instead of paving the way for cordial and peaceful coexistence, revanchist discourses dig trenches of sadness, hatred, misunderstanding and resentment. This tone often characterizes interethnic conversations in Guatemala and other multiethnic societies, hence the timeliness of the book Black Liberation Through the Marketplace: Hope, Heartbreak, and the Promise of America, whose title could be roughly translated this way: African American Liberation Through the Marketplace: Hope, Heartbreak, and the Promise of America.
