   Existe una oposición entre el mundo de los escolásticos, centra­do en cuestiones teológicas y metafísicas, y el mundo moderno, más intere­sado por el avance de la ciencia natural y el bienestar material. Esta oposición se nutre del positivismo de Comte. El que la modernidad se ocupe más de la ciencia no es una opción o elección, es inevitable, pues lo único que le queda es la inmanencia pura del conocimiento. Comte saca de la teoría del conocimiento kantiana sus últimas consecuencias y un terreno donde esto se aprecia con más claridad es en la fundamentación de la moral.

   There is an opposition between the world of the scholastics, fo­cused on theological and metaphysical questions, and the modern world, more interested in the advancement of natural science and material well-be­ing. This opposition feeds on the positivism of Comte. The fact that modernity deals more with science is not an option or choice, it is inevitable, for all that remains is the pure immanence of knowledge. Comte draws its ultimate con­sequences from the Kantian theory of knowledge, and one area where this is most clearly appreciated is in the foundation of morality.
