    Una de las fiestas más importantes de la ciudad de Huamachuco es, sin duda, la de la Virgen de la Alta Gracia. Si bien su existencia data desde la época colonial, es en la actualidad cuando ha cobrado mayor fuerza. Distintos acontecimientos históricos, que la tradición oral conserva, han facilitado su crecimiento. Recientemente, con ocasión de los 50 años de consagración de la Catedral y dedicación a la Virgen de la Alta Gracia, la sociedad huamachuquina, en especial sus fieles devotos, ha tenido la oportunidad de renovar su compromiso de seguir extendiendo la devoción. En el presente artículo, buscamos aproximarnos al fenómeno devocional mariano, teniendo como punto de referencia la propuesta de religiosidad local presentada por el historiador y antropólogo norteamericano, William Christian. Las experiencias religioso-devocionales que él evidenció en algunas regiones de España de fines del siglo xx ayudan a comprender el devenir histórico y realidad actual de la devoción hacia la Virgen de la Alta Gracia de Huamachuco.

    One of the most important festivals in the city of Huamachuco is, without a doubt, that of the Virgin of Alta Gracia. Although its existence dates back to colonial times, it is currently when it has gained greater strength. Different historical events, which the oral tradition preserves, have facilitated its growth. Recently, on the occasion of the 50 years of consecration of the Cathedral and dedication to the Virgin of Alta Gracia, the Huamachuquina society, especially its faithful devotees, has had the opportunity to renew its commitment to continue spreading the devotion. In this article, we seek to approach the Marian devotional phenomenon, having as a point of reference the proposal of local religiosity presented by the North American historian and anthropologist, William Christian. The religious-devotional experiences that he demonstrated in some regions of Spain at the end of the 20th century help to understand the historical development and current reality of the devotion to the Virgin of Alta Gracia of Huamachuco.
