Entre la “emoción” y la “razón”: una reseña de Cuban Chinese

    Los manuscritos de Hernando de los Ríos Coronel, tanto para capturar y crear un asentamiento en Formosa, así como para buscar algún paso interoceánico por el norte del continente americano, se insertaron en las discusiones y transformaciones marítimo- comerciales, políticas y científicas de la época. La región no cambió, pero la percepción sobre ella sí lo hizo en función de los nuevos intereses que se generaron en la zona. Por ello los proyectos que consideraron a Formosa pasaron de asentamiento que sería el primer paso para la conquista de China a zona que aseguraría los tratos hechos con las costas niponas y finalmente para proteger dichos tratos de los crecientes ataques neerlandeses. Formosa fue relevante en el imaginario hispano, pero no como isla a capturar, sino como símbolo del entorno marítimo que su ocupación permitiría usar y proteger.

    The manuscripts of Hernando de los Ríos Coronel, both for capturing and establishing a settlement in Formosa and for searching for a potential interoceanic passage through the northern part of the American continent, were intertwined with the maritime, commercial, political, and scientific discussions and transformations of the time. While the region itself remained unchanged, the perception of it shifted according to the new interests that arose in the area. As a result, the projects concerning Formosa evolved from being viewed as a settlement that would serve as the first step towards the conquest of China, to a zone that would secure trade relations with the Japanese coasts, and ultimately to a means of protecting these relations from the increasing Dutch attacks. Formosa held significance in the Hispanic imagination, not as an island to be captured, but as a symbol of the maritime environment that its occupation would allow to be utilized and safeguarded.
