Resumen de Migration and Capitalist Spectacle: Imagining the Child as Waste in Icebox (Sawka, 2016)

Este artículo examina el nexo entre la modernidad, la infancia y la migración en un análisis detallado del cortometraje Icebox (Sawka, 2016). Se realiza bajo la óptica teórica de la infancia en función del espectáculo capitalista brindado por la geógrafa cultural Cindi Katz. El artículo muestra que el tratamiento injusto de los niños migrantes, se extiende más allá del ámbito político y se relaciona con el capitalismo como un sistema cultural global. Se profundiza en la vida de Óscar, el protagonista migrante hondureño de doce años, durante los tres días de su encarcelamiento en un centro de migrantes después de haber sido detenido por las patrullas fronterizas al cruzar la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos. La cultura dominante burguesa norteamericana le identifica como un niño de desperdicio: lo contrario de la visión burguesa de la infancia utópica. Como consecuencia, Óscar está controlado y excluido de la sociedad normativa.

This article examines the nexus between modernity, childhood representation and migration in a close analysis of the film short Icebox (Sawka, 2016) In particular, while utilizing cultural geographer Cindi Katz’s definition of childhood as a function of capitalist spectacle, I demonstrate that the unjust treatment of child migrants extends beyond politics and is linked to capitalism as a global cultural system. Specifically, I take an in-depth look at the life of the twelve-year-old Honduran migrant Oscar during the three days in which he is incarcerated in a migrant detention center after being apprehended by border patrol while illegally crossing the border alone from Mexico into the U.S. The dominant AngloAmerican middle-class culture identifies him as child waste, the antithesis of the bourgeois vision of a utopic childhood. As a consequence, Oscar is controlled in such a way so as to ensure that he is excluded from normative U.S. society
