    Los nexos entre el crimen-terror se vienen ya estudiando desde la década de 1990 debido al auge del crimenorganizado transnacional, dentro del cual, el tráfico de drogas se posiciona como la actividad ilícita que más beneficios otorga; y el cambio de naturaleza del terrorismo una vez que finaliza la Guerra Fría y se produce la reducción del patrocinio estatal del terrorismo. Actualmente, en el Sahel, los crecientes vínculos entre terroristas yihadistas y narcotraficantes están definidos por una relación de cooperación basada en intereses temporales consistentes y en el mutuo beneficio pudiendo dar lugar al nacimiento de un nuevo y peligroso híbrido en la zona, el "narcoterrorismo".

    The links between crime-terror have been studied since the 1990s due to the rise of transnational organized crime, within which drug trafficking is positioned as the illegal activity that provides the most benefits; and the change in the nature of terrorism once the Cold War ends and state sponsorship of terrorism is reduced. Currently, in the Sahel, the growing links between jihadist terrorists and drug traffickers are defined by a cooperative relationship based on consistent temporary interests and mutual benefit, which could give rise to a new and dangerous hybrid in the area, the "narcoterrorism".
