    Este artículo reconstruye, a partir de catálogos, cartas personales y textos críticos, la participación y recepción crítica de los cuarenta artistas plásticos chilenos que participaron del Salón de París entre 1866 y 1914. Como instancia expositiva y competitiva de mayor influencia a nivel internacional, el Salón se posicionó como un objetivo a alcanzar para los artistas nacionales quienes, con el solo hecho de ser admitidos a exponer, aspiraban a adquirir relevancia en el campo chileno y justificaban sus eventuales financiamientos estatales. Por otra parte, la experiencia fue significativa para ellos en términos personales, al mismo tiempo que su presencia lo era para validar la importancia del propio Salón. En este sentido, la posición y la participación de los chilenos se insertaba en relaciones globales que invitan a repensar el nudo centro/periferia.

    This article analyses catalogues, personal letters, and reviews by critics, in particular, to reconstruct the participation and critical reception of the forty Chilean visual artists in the Paris Salon between 1866 and 1914. As it was the exhibition and competitive space with the greatest international influence in this period, Chilean artists aspired to participate in the Salon. On one hand, being allowed to exhibit their work in the Salon meant artists would gain relevance in Chile and justify potential state support. On the other, their participation was a significant personal experience and a confirmation of the importance of the Salon. In this sense, the position and participation of Chileans took place within a network of global relations that invite us to rethink the relationship between the centre and the periphery.
