    Desde los albores de la humanidad la enfermedad ha sido un elemento que ha formado parte de la propia vida cotidiana de las gentes. Cuando ésta se convierte en algo más grande y se transforma en epidemia desde el propio individuo hasta las mismas estructuras sociales y económicas se ven afectadas de manera grave. La peste negra, la fiebre amarilla… son algunas de las que conmovieron a Europa entera desde la Edad Media hasta el siglo XX. En este trabajo hemos elegido la epidemia de cólera de 1855 tanto por su magnitud como por ser representativa de la Europa del siglo XIX. La gran mortandad que produjo en todo el continente es prueba de ello. Pasemos pues, al estudio de la gran pandemia de 1855 y conozcamos, en la manera de la posible, como afectó al Cehegín de este tiempo.

    Since the dawn of humanity, disease has been an element that has been part of people’s daily lives. When it becomes something bigger and turns into an epidemic, from the individual to the social and economic structures themselves are seriously affected. The Black Death, yellow fever… are some of the epidemics that shook the whole of Europe from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. In this paper we have chosen the cholera epidemic of 1855 both because of its magnitude and because it is representative of 19th century Europe. The great mortality it caused throughout the continent is proof of this. Let us pass then, to the study of the great pandemic of 1855 and let us know, as far as possible, how it affected the Cehegín of this time.
