Introduction: currently, in clinical practice there are two bracket systems depending on the size of their slot: 0.018 x 0.025 inches and 0.022 × 0.028 inches. Both types are widely used today and, although each has its own characteristics, there is a general lack of knowledge about the superiority of one system over the other, making it difficult to choose.

Objetive: to determine the frequency of use of the two main types of bracket systems in Spain according to their slot size: 0.018” x 0.025” and 0.022” x 0.028”.

Material and methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out on orthodontists belonging to the Spanish Society of Orthodontics (SEDO) using a questionnaire.

This consisted of two parts. The first part collected the profile of the person surveyed (sex, year of promotion in dentistry and orthodontics as well as the university where they studied and the region in which they carried out their clinical practice). The second part studied preferences in fixed appliances. A descriptive analysis of the main variables under study was carried out (frequencies, percentages and cross tables).

      Results: 76.5 % of the sample mainly used 0.022” x 0.028” brackets, while the remaining 23.5 % used 0.018” x 0.025” brackets.

Conclusion: according to the results of this survey, the majority of orthodontists practising in Spain use 0.022” x 0.028” slot brackets. This is mainly because they perceive that this option offers better results.
