  Este trabajo es un diagnóstico de las características de 2,486 aspirantes, que presentaron las pruebas de habilidades y conocimientos del CoSNET, para su admisión al Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida, en junio de 1999. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en las pruebas, con respecto al género, tipo de escuela y se encontraron correlaciones positivas moderadas entre promedio de egreso de la preparatoria y la prueba de conocimientos. Las mujeres obtuvieron puntajes más altos en conocimientos, mientras que los hombres en habilidades numéricas. Los aspirantes que venían de preparatorias privadas tuvieron puntajes más altos en ambas pruebas que aquellos que venían de preparatoria estatales o federales. Se sugiere considerar el uso de las pruebas de habilidades con mayor cautela al decidir la admisión de alumnos.

  This paper is a diagnostic of the characteristics of 2486 of students who were administered the abilities and knowledge tests developed by CoSNET, used as a requirement to apply for admission at the Technological Institute of Merida in June 1999. Significant differences were found regarding gender, type of school. A moderate positive correlation was also found between GPA from high school and the knowledge test score. Women got higher scores than men on the knowledge test, while men got higher scores than women on numeric abilities. Students coming from private preparatory schools, scored higher on both tests than those coming from state or federal schools. It is suggested that the use of the abilities test should be considered more cautiously when deciding the admission of students.
