Resumen de Toma de decisiones: autoreporte de los factores que influyen en la elección de una carrera profesional

Esta investigación tuvo como propósito conocer los factores que influyen en la elección profesional, así como la certeza del alumno acerca de la carrera elegida. La población fue de 933 alumnos inscritos al primer semestre del curso escolar 1993-1994 en 13 escuelas y facultades de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán. La muestra final fue de 361 alumnos (195 hombres y 166 mujeres) seleccionados por el muestreo probabilístico. El instrumento consistió en un Inventario de Motivación hacia la Profesión elaborado exprofeso. Los resultados indican que los factores que más influyen en la elección profesional son el interés por la carrera, las habilidades para la carrera, el plan de estudios de la carrera, el prestigio social de la carrera y la familia. Únicamente el 14% de la muestra contestó que sí cambiaría de carrera en caso de tener oportunidad. Se investigó también información de estas variables por género y escuela.

This investigation pursued to learn the factors that have influence on the choice of a professional career in addition to find out how certain of their selection students are. Total population amounted to 933 students who registered to enter the first semester of the academic year 1993-1994 at 13 Schools and Faculties of the Autonomous University of Yucatan. Final sample was of 361 students (195 male and 166 female) selected through the probabilistic sampling method. The tool used was an Inventory on Motivation towards the Professional Career which was specifically designed for the survey. Results show that the most influential factors on the professional selection are: the interest for the career itself, the abilities for the career, the syllabus of the career, social prestige of the career, and the family. Only 14% of the sample said that they would switch careers had they the opportunity for so doing. Data on these variables was also investigated both by gender and school.
