“Vingai-vos hoje sem fraquejar”: morte e política na 'História da Guerra do Peloponeso', de Tucídides

    I explore how Thucydides, in his History of the Peloponnesian War, dealt with some issues related to the political calculation of death as carried out by the Athenians, with emphasis on the narrative of the armed conflict between Athens and Mytilene, which occurred between 428 and 427 BCE (Thuc., III, 1-19; 25-50). At this point, disregarding for the rules that shaped the Hellenic “code of conduct” on the battlefield gave basis to what I call necropolitics, especially about the killing of prisoners of war. Moreover, debates in the Athenian Assembly served to justify this kind of misbehavior, as shown in the Thucydidian account about the dispute between Cleon and Diodotus over the appropriate punishment of the revolting Mytelineans and the value of capital punishment.

    O artigo investiga a maneira como Tucídides, na História da Guerra do Peloponeso, tratou questões relacionadas a políticas de morte levadas a cabo pelos atenienses, com destaque especial à narrativa sobre o conflito bélico entre as póleis de Atenas e Mitilene, ocorrido entre 428 e 427 AEC (Thuc., III, 1-19; 25-50). Demonstro como o desrespeito às normas que configuravam o “código de conduta” helênico no campo de batalha dava base ao que chamo aqui de necropolítica, destacando especialmente o assassinato de prisioneiros rendidos. Mais que isso, as próprias discussões na Assembleia ateniense quanto ao tema serviam para justificar esse tipo de comportamento, como se vê por meio do relato tucidideano a respeito dos debates entre Cléon e Diódoto acerca da punição adequada aos mitilênios revoltosos e, pois, o valor da pena capital.
