The Iberian settlement of Begastri is the basis of the 2500 years history of Cehegín. Through all kinds of documents such as the “Falsos Cronicones” we have tried to find, unsuccessfully, the fate of this ancient Roman-Visigothic site. It was only thanks to the epigraphic discovery of the ARA Begastrense dedicated to Jupiter in the “Cabecico Roenas” or “cabezo de la Muela”, that the exact location of Begastri was finally discovered in 1878 by Don Aureliano. We would have to wait a century to witness the excavation of numerous structures that have allowed us to establish a more reliable history: from its birth as an Iberian settlement, through its Roman past, its incipient Christianization, the barbarian invasions that led to the Visigothic rule and the officialization of the religion of Christ (a time when it was the seat of the Bishopric of Cartagena) until its destruction by Almanzor and conversion into a Muslim settlement.
