The paper aims to face the relevance of the religious phenomenon in the context of the EU primary law. The analysis starts connecting the individual’s religious dimension to its connotation of culture and identity, in the first place. To follow, the paper focuses on the influence of religions on the European integration process, in order to outline the secular model to which the pluralistic EU takes inspiration from. The ECJ case law on religious freedom and on religion-based discrimination on the job will be analysed to highlight its critical points.
