El inicio de la actividad pesquera industrial en la Patagonia: un análisis con foco en Puerto Rawson, Chubut

    Describo y analizo el inicio de la actividad pesquera industrial en la Patagonia, reconstruyendo parte de la historia del desarrollo de esta rama económica en la región a partir de diversas fuentes (medios de prensa locales, documentos oficiales, estudios científicos, etc.). El punto de asiento clave de esta pesquería fue Puerto Rawson, en el noreste de Chubut.

    Allí, desde mediados de la década del ’40 del siglo XX, comenzó a estructurarse una actividad pesquera con características industriales. Se registra la transformación generada por la dinamización de esta pesquería, a partir de la demanda del aceite vitamínico provisto por el hígado de cazón y luego por la captura de langostinos y otras especies.

    Hacia el final del período analizado, la región empezó a transitar la implantación del modelo de polo desarrollista sobre su territorio, proceso en el cual la pesca no fue considerada un eje clave. La actividad quedó reducida a una lógica de enclave, dependiente de mercados extrarregionales y con extremas fluctuaciones según la presencia o escasez del recurso, sin que las políticas estatales generasen respuestas ante esos ciclos. Por ello describir, analizar y periodizar el inicio de esta rama económica en Patagonia aportará a pensar caminos para no repetir esas dinámicas.

    I describe and analyze the beginning of the industrial fishing activity in Patagonia, recovering part of the history of the development of this economic branch in the region from various sources (local media, official documents, scientific studies, etc.). The key entry point for this fishery was Puerto Rawson, in the northeast of Chubut.In the mid-40s of the 20th century, a fishing activity with industrial characteristics began to take shape. Here the transformation generated by the revitalization of this fishery is recorded, from the demand for the vitamin oil provided by the dogfish liver and later by the capture of shrimp and other species.Towards the end of the analyzed period, the region began to move towards the implementation of the development pole model on its territory, a process in which fishing was not considered a key axis. The activity was reduced to an enclave logic, dependent on extra-regional markets and with extreme fluctuations depending on the presence or scarcity of the resource, without state policies generating responses to these cycles. For this reason, describing, analyzing and periodizing the beginning of this economic branch in Patagonia will contribute to thinking about paths to avoid repeating these dynamics.
