Pretendemos enriquecer los estudios fronterizos coloniales a partir de un abordaje institucional de la sociedad mapuche, el cual busca rescatar la importancia del ayllarewe en el entramado de la Guerra de Arauco. Nuestra intención es caracterizar a este conglomerado político y social dentro de un marco que va más allá del carácter belicista con que se le suele asociar. Mediante una aproximación revisionista de las fuentes (crónicas y documentación inédita de los siglos XVI y XVII), pretendemos resignificar la naturaleza, funcionalidad y estructura de este cuerpo sociopolítico, reconociéndole un carácter más complejo que el que tradicionalmente se le ha atribuido.

I intend to enrich colonial borderland studies from an institutional approach to Mapuche society, which seeks to rescue the importance of ayllarewe in the Arauco War. I attempt to characterize this political and social conglomerate within a framework that goes beyond the warmongering character by which it is usually associated. I intend to resignify the nature, functionality and structure of this sociopolitical body. I intend to resignify the nature, functionality and structure of this sociopolitical body by means of a revisionist approaching to the sources (chronicles and unpublished documentation from the 16th and 17th centuries), recognizing a more complex character than the one traditionally attributed to it.
