In judgment Darboe and Camara v. Italy the European Court of Human Rights ruled for the first time on the disputed issue of the age assessment of minor asylum seekers, alongside with the more common issues of the inadequacy of the reception conditions and the lack of effective judicial remedies. This judgment thus provides an opportunity to once again dwell upon the effectiveness of the remedies at disposal of minor asylum seekers offered respectively by the Court of Strasbourg and by the protection system under EU law. It is eventually argued that, for different reasons, both systems appear to be seriously deficient, so that even an upholding judgment does not necessarily translate into a real and concrete benefit for the applicant.
