Armed conflicts inevitably cause displacement of persons. Displaced persons or persons in transit include migrants who have left their countries of origin or habitual residence, whether by force or voluntarily. This article will examine the protection under International Humanitarian Law (IHL) of migrants in situations of international armed conflict with a focus on the different categories into which migrants may fall under the applicable provisions. It will also examine the protection under international humanitarian law of migrants in situations of internal armed conflict. Reference will also be made to certain issues raised by the application of IHL to the movement and circulation of migrants, which are of particular relevance to migration, in particular those related to the movement of migrants through countries in armed conflict.
