The vulnerabilities identified in the electricity market and ways to address them have been the subject of research in the academic literature for years. However, it is only the current energy crisis that has aroused political interest in reform. This article analyses why this is the case and how strongly the current debate is linked to national interests in the direction of European energy and industrial policy, which will determine its outcome
