Emerged from a conference in 2015 at Humboldt University, Berlin, this edited volume is a collection of seven case-related histories ranging from ancient Greek to late imperial China and contemporary practices. Although in the Introduction, this apparently heterogeneous collection is modestly taken as “case studies of how to think cases” (p. 6), the articles in fact form into meaningful dialogues with each other and jointly offer a rich account for the multiple dimensions of case-based thinking in history. In this review, I will follow these internal connections to unfold my discussion.
