  • Resumen
    • Here we are in the middle of the year with time having well and truly flown by since I stood at the lectern in Bastwick Street on a cold and wet January evening and delivered my Inaugural Address, titled ‘The nature and nurture of a career in structural engineering’. During my presentation, I discussed my views on the challenges that face us as a profession, the hurdles we have already navigated, and the work still to do.

I challenged us all to consider whether we could do more to support and facilitate site experience for our younger members, the importance of both formal and informal mentoring, and pathways to membership for engineers and technicians on ‘non-standard’ routes. I also challenged the Institution to reconsider how it communicates its first-class portfolio of products and learning opportunities to academics, employers and individuals.

In the months that followed, I have been afforded the pleasure of travelling around many of our regional groups, meeting members and discussing the issues that face our profession.
