Las serpientes son un grupo de reptiles cuya anatomía y hábitos pecu- liares —no tienen patas y viven casi siempre ocultas y en silencio— han sido malinterpretados hasta convertirlas en enemigas de la humanidad. Esta leyenda negra, agravada por la existencia de algunas especies realmente venenosas, los ha convertido en animales vilipendiados y perseguidos. En su amplia faceta cultural hay que destacar su relación amor-odio con lo femenino, su presencia en mitos y leyendas, y una amplia carga simbólica como imagen del mal (diablo, lascivia) pero también del bien (medicina, heráldica). Este simbolismo les hace estar presente en leyendas y obras de arte de todos los tiempos, así como en la mitología, la heráldica o el folclore de Extremadura y de buena parte del mundo.

Snakes are a group of reptiles whose peculiar anatomy and habits —they have no legs and live hidden and in silence— have been misunderstood to the point of turning them into enemies of mankind. This black legend, aggravated by the existence of some venomous species, has turned them into vilified and persecuted animals. In their broad cultural facet, we must highlight their love- hate relationship with women, their presence in myths and legends, and a great symbolic significance as an image of evil (devil, lasciviousness) but also of good (medicine, heraldry). This enormous symbolic significance makes them present in legends and works of art of all times, as well as in the mythology, heraldry or folklore of Extremadura and anywhere in the world.
