Francesca Mestre Roca, Eulàlia Vintró Castells

  • Descriptions of works of art is a very common literary form of the Greek literature of the Roman Empire, as a development of the progymnasma ekphrasis included in the repertory of rhetoric paideia. Our aim in this paper is to focus on the Descriptions by Callistratus, often neglected, and to put them side by side with the Imagines of the Philostratus, in order to show their differences and to make evident that the approaches of each author are mostly not the same, although they share similar formal skills
